The Holy Rosary is one of the most treasured prayers in the Catholic Church. Given to us through the Blessed Virgin Mary, it is a beautiful way to meditate on the life, death, and resurrection of her Son, Jesus Christ. For centuries, popes, saints, and ordinary Catholics have turned to the Rosary in times of joy, sorrow, and need. It is a powerful weapon against sin, a school of prayer, and a source of countless graces.
Whether you are new to the faith or have prayed the Rosary for years, this simple guide will walk you through how to pray it. The Rosary is easy to learn and can be prayed anywhere—at home, in the car, during a walk, or before the Blessed Sacrament.
What Is the Rosary?
The word “rosary” means “crown of roses.” Each Hail Mary is like a rose offered to Our Lady. While we pray the vocal prayers (Our Father and Hail Mary), we meditate on key events in the lives of Jesus and Mary called Mysteries. This combination of prayer and meditation helps our minds and hearts stay close to Christ.
A traditional Rosary has five decades (groups of ten beads). Praying one set of five decades is called praying “the Rosary.” Many people pray all five decades at once, while others pray one decade at a time throughout the day.
What You Will Need
- A set of Rosary beads (any style works—wood, cord, glass, or metal).
- If you do not have beads, you can use your fingers to count.
- A quiet heart and the desire to spend time with Jesus and Mary.
At Holy Gift Shops, we offer a wide variety of beautiful Rosaries to help you begin or deepen this devotion.
Step-by-Step Guide to Praying the Rosary
Here is the traditional way to pray the Rosary:
-
Make the Sign of the Cross Hold the crucifix and say: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
-
Pray the Apostles’ Creed (While holding the crucifix) I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.
-
Pray the Our Father On the first large bead: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
-
Pray Three Hail Marys On the next three small beads. These are traditionally offered for an increase in faith, hope, and charity. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. (Repeat three times.)
-
Pray the Glory Be Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
-
Announce the First Mystery and Pray the Decade Choose the set of Mysteries for the day (see list below).
- Announce the Mystery (for example: “The First Joyful Mystery: The Annunciation”).
- Pray one Our Father on the large bead.
- On each of the ten small beads, pray one Hail Mary while quietly thinking about the Mystery.
- After the ten Hail Marys, pray the Glory Be.
- Many people also add the Fatima Prayer: O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell; lead all souls to Heaven, especially those who have most need of your mercy. Amen.
-
Repeat for the Remaining Mysteries Move to the next large bead and announce the next Mystery. Continue until you have prayed all five decades.
-
Conclude the Rosary After the fifth decade, pray: Hail, Holy Queen (Salve Regina) Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Finish with the Sign of the Cross: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Some people also add the Prayer to St. Michael or a special intention at the end.

Tips for Praying the Rosary Well
- Meditate on the Mysteries. The Hail Marys help keep your hands and lips busy so your mind can focus on the scene from the life of Jesus and Mary. Imagine you are there. Ask: What does this teach me about Jesus? How does it apply to my life?
- Pray with your heart. If your mind wanders, gently bring it back. Even imperfect prayer is pleasing to God.
- Offer intentions. Before you begin, offer the Rosary for a specific person, family need, or the Church.
- Pray it daily. Many families pray the Rosary together after dinner or before bed. Even one decade a day builds a strong habit.
- Use it in any season. The Rosary is especially powerful during Lent, Advent, or times of trial.
The Rosary is a gift from Our Lady to help us grow closer to her Son. As St. John Paul II taught, it is a “compendium of the Gospel.” Through it, we learn to see Jesus with Mary’s eyes and love Him with her heart.
At Holy Gift Shops, we carry a beautiful selection of Rosaries for adults and children, including one-decade pocket rosaries and traditional five-decade rosaries. Many feature devotional medals, beautiful crucifixes, and images of Our Lady to help you pray with greater devotion.
May the Blessed Virgin Mary bless you as you pray the Rosary. May each decade draw you deeper into the mystery of Christ’s love for you.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
